The back of the external modem has two connectors for phone hookup. One connects to the telephone and the other connects directly into the wall phone jack. A separate cable connects the modem to a serial port on the computer. The computer uses ~AT~ commands to tell the modem what number to dial and what parameters and protocols to set. The answering and calling machines must be set appropriately to allow the two computers to communicate.
